Roddy Williams – The Atheist Poet

Ode to Celine Dion (2006)

Celine Dion. Celine Dion.
Your voice goes on and on and on.
In English, French and other tongues.
God bless your international lungs!

You paint your fingernails with care.
They’re made for waving in the air.
You poise them, pout and pause for breath,
Then sing some more, of ships and death.

The nuns whose lives were torn apart;
The postman with a broken heart;
The sundered love, the ruptured tryst;
The suicidal pianist.

No other diva sings like you.
No other nails have such strong glue.
You’ll sing at us till hope is gone.
So carry on, Celine Dion.
