Roddy Williams – The Atheist Poet

orphan poems (2006)

i once found a poem
hidden in a folded piece of
left on a bus,
like teenagers leave babies
so they can both
give joy to others again
but separately and in different ways.

i carried it dutifully for months
warm in a kangaroo pouchpocket
but then forgot it
till it floated into my thoughts
like a ‘silent witness’ drowning case
bleached of its words.

somehow it fathered this
inkspermed scrawled and
squalling infant
which i will leave on a bus
like a good mother.

published in the long-departed online magazine ‘Underground Window’ in 2006
